Year 2: Artwork

THE AVIARY (End of Year Submission)

My project this year was an exhibition called The Aviary, which used expanded painting to make an immersive installation depicting what I refer to as a psychological landscape. This body of work refocused my attention on making paintings (after delving more into photography and sculpture last year) and then using those paintings to create an environment. This was a exploration in expanding the 2-dimensional surface of a painting into 3-d. I accomplished this by creating cutouts and then mounting, supporting or hanging those cutouts in the space. I also worked with transparent materials so that for some works the viewer was able to walk around the painting and see both the front and back of the marks. This body of work is building on ideas I am developing for my thesis exhibition in 2014.
